Canberra City Post Office

Formerly Ainslie Post Office (1) located in the Sydney Buildings. the office name was changed to Canberra City early in 1929 and was operated by A G Griffiths. When the NSW State Savings Bank ceased activities in 1931 the Savings Bank building on the south-western corner of Northbourne Avenue and Alinga Street was purchased for the purpose of relocating the post office to that location. The office moved into the premises on 1 October 1931. In April 1957 a building formerly occupied by Australian National Airways was purchased as an extension to the post office. The office closed on 12 April 1984 being replaced by Canberra GPO.

Canberra City Post Office utilized a Type 2A FCT date- stamp 1932-1937 and a Type 2C ‘FCT’ 1930-1938. A Type 2A date-stamp ‘ACT’ possibly altered from ‘FCT’ was used in 1940  and a Type 2C ‘ACT’  altered from FCT used between 1939-1940. A Type 3(i) date-stamp x3 ‘ACT’ was used between 1940-1982, a Type 3(i)(T) ‘ACT’ 1950-1959, a Type 3(i)(n) 1973, a Type 3D(ii) x2 ACT 1968-83 and Type 3D(ii)(T) ACT 1979. A Type 3D (ii) ‘ACT’ date-stamp code ‘RS’ was used 1977-1982 and a Type 4A (i)(T) ‘ACT’ PC-2061 1982. Circular date-stamp ‘CANBERRA CITY ACT AUST’ was reported stolen 1st November 1981.

A.C.T. cut down Relief 'STL' is recorded used on 6 May 1963 A.C.T. Relief '125' was used at the Office between early 1982 and February 1983. Priority Paid Relief '187' was seen used at the Office from mid December 1982 through February 1983.
