Russell Hill Post Office
The Russell Hill settlement lay on a
site in what is now the lower section of Blamey Crescent at its intersection with Constitution Avenue, Campbell. The site which comprised approximately
100 residences, a store and school was established to house predominantly
tradesman who had come to the Capital to work in construction. The camp was
temporary in nature.
A telephone office was established at
Russell Hill on 24 December 1927 and a post office on 14
June 1929. James Burr who ran the local store with his wife Emma was appointed
postmaster. The office closed on 30 April 1938.
The office utilized a Type 2A ‘FCT’ date stamp, an example of which is contained in the Bruce Collection.
