Molonglo Defence Camp Post Office
A Department of Defence establishment,
the camp was planned and built in deep secrecy. It was built over a 12 week
period in the early part of 1918 at the request and expense of of the British
Government, designed to accommodate a military unit and 3000 German nationals
then interned in China.
1200 workers were involved in the construction. The camp was located in
Pialligo on a site 4 miles west of the Queanbeyan Post Office, now a part of
modern day Fyshwick. The Camp Commandant
was Brigadier General Spencer Brown. An official post office opened on 7
March 1918 and later changed to Molonglo Concentration Camp on 19
June 1918. The Molonglo Camp was not used for its original purpose instead
housing German and Austrian families from British Dominions in the Pacific and Far East and of mariners transferred from Bourke and
Berrima.
The post office utilized a Type 2C
date stamp recorded in 1918.
