Duntroon Post Office
Whilst postal facilities had been operated at the Duntroon Military Camp previously, the official Duntroon Post Office opened on 1 September 1917 operated by H S Clayton. The office is reported as having subsequently closed on 31 December 1930, reopening as a post and telegraph office on 1 July 1933 under H H Nicholson. The office again gained official status on 8 January 1951. On 28 March 1952 E E Hearne was appointed post master.
The post office operated in various rooms for over 40 years before finally gaining permanent accommodation in a services facilities in 1956,
On 1 June 1972 the office was again of non official status operated by H W Nellthorp-Quibell. On 1 November 1978 the office again gained official status and W P Arlidge was appointed post master on 11 of January 1979. The office became a post office agency on 2 November 1987 and is located at the intersection of Fraser and Legge Roads.
Duntroon post office initially used a date stamp inscribed ‘DUNTROON AUSTRALIA’ in the period 1918 to 1922. A Type 2C ‘FCT’ date stamp is recorded in use between 1926 and 1937 and a Type 2C date stamp altered to ‘ACT’ between 1939 and 1968. A Type 3E(i) date stamp ‘ACT’ is recorded between 1966 and 1986. Type 4A(i) ‘ACT’ date stamps x 2 post code 2600 are recorded between 1974 and 1995.
