Federal Territory Brickworks
Receiving Office
On 4 January 1917 approval was given to a temporary
designation for a proposed receiving office at the Federal Brickworks, Canberra. The brickworks were located in what is now the suburb of Yarralumla and previously known as West Ridge. At this time a Private Bag arrangement was in place serviced by the Queanbeyan /Uriarra Contractor.
On 15 March 1917 the permanent
designation of West Ridge was approved. Little is known of the operations of
what appears to be an interim receiving facility with West Ridge Receiving Office not being
formally established until June 1917.
Two examples of ink manuscript cancellations within a violet circular hand stamp, believed to have originated from this facility, are recorded
in 1917. Very rare postal markings.
There appears to be no official Post Office file for the facility within the National Archives. However, a Federal Capital Commission file relating to the P.M.G seeking approval for a name for the facility exists and from which this information was obtained. An extensive search to locate additional information in respect of the status of the Receiving Office has not been fruitful.
