Australian Capital Territory Post Offices

Westlake

Westlake Post Office

A post and telegraph office was opened at Westlake on 6 April 1925 operated by R W Law. Westlake was located on the site between the current Perth Avenue and Alexandrina Drive on land which has the ‘No Through Road’ sign opposite the Yacht Club, Yarralumla. The area was a major centre during the period 1923 to 1928, housing construction workers on the new Parliament House Building and nearby buildings. It is estimated to have had a peak population of approximately 700 persons. The office closed on 31 May 1955. (Alan Sailsbury reports closure as 27 February 1957)

The office utilized a Type 2A ‘FCT’ date stamp altered from ‘NSW’. It was then later altered from 'FCT' to 'ACT'.

The Westlake date stamp was later cut down to form the 'STL' Relief date stamp.
