Uriarra Forrest

Uriarra Forest Post Office

The Uriarra forestry settlement located approximately 32 kms west of Canberra on the Brindabella Road was first established in the early 1920’s and was the home of personnel engaged in re-forestation work and eradication of rabbits. The forest later grew to cover approximately 7200 acres of pines and employed hundreds of workers at various times.  A non official post office was established on 3 April 1956 operated by Mrs E J Franklin. It was temporarily closed on 5 April 1957 and reopened on 1 May 1959. It was again temporarily closed on 15 January 1966 and reopened 24 January 1966. It again temporarily closed on 27 May 1966 and reopened with a telephone exchange on 31 October 1966. On 1 February 1967 it was designated a small country automatic exchange and the post office closed on 30 October 1981. The settlement was largely destroyed in the Canberra bushfires of 2003.

A Type 3(i) date stamp was used by the office.

Relief No.107 - A.C.T. was reported used in the Office in March 1980.
