Canberra Post Office (II), previously Acton, operated as a Post Office and Money Order Office from 2 June 1913 when the original Canberra office was renamed Ainslie. The office became an Official Post Office on 30 June 1913 operated by G. C. Bondfield. The office operated from premises in Acton located near the office of the Federal Capital Territory Administrator and the Commonwealth Bank. The office became a manual telephone exchange on 14 October 1921.



The office was relocated to the front portion of No. 1 Secretariat Building at Parkes on 21 March 1927. On 1 February 1983 the name was changed to Queen Victoria Terrace Post Office. That office subsequently closed on 30 August 1996.



Canberra Post Office (II) initially utilized a Type 1D(i) date stamp transferred from Canberra (I) on 2 June 1913. A Type 2A(T) ‘CANBERRA AUSTRALIA’ date stamp was used between 1914 and 1921.  Type 2A ‘FCT’ between 1927-1935. A Type 2A ‘TELEGRAPHS CANBERRA FCT’ is recorded in 1927 and a Type 2A ‘TELEGRAPHS CANBERRA ACT” date stamp used between 1949 and 1962. Type 2C(T) ‘AIR MAIL CANBERRA ACT’ between 1951-1962. Type 3(ii)T ‘FCT’ date stamp used in 1937 and later altered to ‘ACT’ and used between 1939-1969. Type 3(i) x2 ‘ACT’ utilized between 1945-1963. Type 3(i)T ‘ACT’ date stamp used between 1955-1965. Type 3(i)T ‘CANBERRA R.S.’ used between 1960-1974. Type 3A ‘ACT’ code ‘2’ used in 1970. Type 3B(T) ‘ACT’ code ‘3’ was used between 1961-1976. Type 3D(i) ‘ACT’ (stars in lieu of side bars) used between 1969-1983. Type 4A(i)(T) ‘ACT’ post code 2600 codes ‘1 to 7’ used between 1970-1982. Type 4A(i) ‘ACT’ codes ‘1 (time removed, 2 and 3’ used between 1981-1982. Type 4A(i)(T) ‘ACT ’ codes ‘RS 1 and 2’ used between 1977-1980.

N.S.W. single letter cut down Relief 'H' is recorded used in October 1922 and N.S.W. double letter cut down Relief 'DG' is recorded used in February 1948.

July 1913 specimens of Type 1D(i) Canberra NSW date stamp cancelling Victoria 3d orange punctured OS.  Almost certainly affixed to Federal Department of Home Affairs mail. While based in Victoria, Department established office at Duntroon during construction of Duntroon Military College, then at Acton and other sites.


31 Jan 1914 Type 2A(T) ‘Canberra Australia’  cds cancelling pair of Victoria 4d olive punctured OS. Almost certainly affixed to Federal Department of Home Affairs mail. While based in Victoria Department established office at Duntroon during construction of Duntroon Military College, then at Acton and other sites.




5 May 1916 Type 2A(T) ‘Canberra Australia’  cds cancelling perforated OS kangaroo & GV combination on piece. 
16 February 1948 N.S.W. double letter cut down Relief 'DG' date stamp used at Canberra on registered FDC..

19 October 1922 OHMS Works and Railways Canberra, Federal Territory, envelope to Sydney cancelled with N.S.W. single letter cut down Relief 'H' date stamp.




21 June 1923 Type 2A(T) ‘Canberra Australia’  cds cancelling 2d red GV on OHMS Department Works and Railways cover to Sydney.


























Last day of operation as Canberra Post Office. Renamed Queen Victoria Terrace.
