Hall Post Office

Hall village is located to the north of Ginninderra village on the Barton Highway between Canberra and Yass. A post office was established in the village on 1 June 1888, following representations from Mr E. W. O’Sullivan MP. Mr John Southwell was appointed postmaster. At the time Hall was described as being on the Yass to Queanbeyan road , 2 miles on the Yass side of Ginninderra. On 19 January 1891 John Southwell resigned and was replaced by his assistant Albert Southwell. The office was operated from a store operated by Southwell. On 1 April 1893 B. R. Southwell was appointed postmaster. Southwell later sold the business to A. W. Flower who became postmaster on 11 October 1899. Flower later sold the business to Morgan Williams who temporarily became postmaster. Next door to Williams’ store was another store operated by the former postmaster B. R. Southwell. When Williams sold his store to C. W. Southwell the latter was appointed postmaster on 19 April 1901. Southwell subsequently built new premises in late 1912 and the post office moved in on 3 January 1913.

On 1 June 1917 money order and savings bank facilities were extended to the office and on 5 June 1952 a rural automatic exchange was installed.

The Office operated from a number of different locations over the period, including Gordon Murphy's Store, where Gordon was appointed Postmaster in 1940.

Hall is now operated as a Licensed Post Office from commercial premises located at 4 Victoria Street. At 1 January 2020, the Office continued to operate from this premises.

Hall utilized a numeral obliterator No. 1422 which was subsequently replaced by a Type 1D(i) date stamp with use recorded between 1888 and 1918. Type 1D(i) (altered to FCT) is recorded in 1929 and Type 2C ‘FCT’ between 1927 and 1937. a Type 2C ‘ACT’ (altered from ‘FCT’) is recorded between 1946 and 1966. A Type 3D(i) ‘ACT’ date stamp is recorded between 1967 and 1995.
