Canberra Mail Centre
Located in Nyrang Street, Fyshwick at its
intersection with Canberra Avenue,
the Australia Post Canberra Mail Centre was
officially opened on Monday 9 November 1987, having relocated from its
previous location at the intersection of Wentworth Avenue and Leichhardt Street, Kingston. Manager was Mr Terry Taylor.
The Centre, which was one of 19 mail processing facilities in N.S.W. and the A.C.T, employed 290 staff and serviced the Canberra/Monaro Region. It became known nationally following the explosion of a letter bomb in the mail sorting room in
1997.
As at January 2020, the Canberra Mail Centre continued to operate from Nyrang Street. However, there are no shop front facilities for the public, business being transacted from retail facilities in Townsville Street.
The centre utilized Type 4F ‘ACT’ post
code 2610, codes ‘1,2,3,4,7,8’ recorded between 1988 and 1992.
