Downer Post Office

Located in Frencham Place, Downer at the Downer shopping Centre, 5kms from the City centre, the Downer post office was situated next to the community centre in part of what was the original CSIRO plant and industry experimental farm centre at that location. Interestingly, Alan Salisbury reported the Office opening as 12 August 1964, with his collection containing a Registered cover bearing that date and a provisional registration label No.14. The office closed on 30 September 1986. At time of closure the Office was operated by M Carruthers.

The office utilized a Type 3D(i) ‘ACT’ date stamp recorded in use between 1964 and 1977. A Type 4E(i) ‘ACT’ post code 2602 date stamp was recorded between 1980 and 1982.
