Canberra General Post Office




Located in the Canberra Jolimont Centre, Alinga Street, Canberra City, the post office opened as an official post office on 12 April 1983 replacing Canberra City post office. Postmaster was R D Rodda. The Office was still operating from this site in January 2020.

The office utilized Type 4E(i)(T) ‘GPO CANBERRA / ACT 2601’ codes ‘4,6,8,10,11’ date stamps recorded between 1983 and 1988. A Type 4E(i) code ‘5’ date stamp is recorded between 1987 and 1988. A Type 4E(ii)(T) ‘ACT’ code ‘RS’ date stamp is recorded in use in 1985. A Type 4F ‘M/R’ code ‘10’ date stamp is recorded between 1990 and 1991.

A.C.T. Relief date stamp '108' is recorded used at the GPO Canberra on 19 May 1989 and at the Philatelic Counter on 20 October 1989, whilst normal date stamp is being repaired. A.C.T. Relief '126' was reported used at the Office between 16 March and 26 March 1984 and A.C.T. Relief '127' used in the telegrams section between 21 March 1984 and 26 March 1984. It was also seen again on 13 July 1984. A.C.T. Relief '148' was in use at the Office during late November to early December 1986.

Priority Paid Relief '186' was seen used at the Office on 21 September and 14 October 1982. Priority Paid Relief '185' was seen used at the Office on 20 March 1987.
