Williamsdale Post Office

Williamsdale is located adjacent the railway line approximately 35 kilometres south of Canberra and between Royalla and Michelago. It was first settled in the mid 1820’s.

A receiving office was established at Williamsdale on 16 April 1880 operated by Mrs Esther Bates. The office closed on 6 December 1887, only to subsequently reopen again on 1 May 1888. It’s status was upgraded to post office on 1 December 1898 with Mrs Bates continuing as postmistress until her death on 9 August 1910. The office was finally closed on 19 December 1969.

Williamsdale utilized a numeral obliterator No. 1909 which was replaced by a Type 1D(i) date stamp recorded in 1913 and a Type 2A date stamp recorded  between 1916 and 1937. Initially inscribed N.S.W it was later altered to F.C.T. A Type 2C date-stamp inscribed A.C.T was in use until closure.
