Uriarra Post Office
Uriarra when first settled in the 1830’s was known as Urayarra. The spelling was changed to Uriarra to avoid confusion with mail delivery which was inadvertently being directed to a place of the same name in South Australia.
Mail services to the Uriarra district went from Queanbeyan via Yarralumla and the Uriarra Crossing. A receiving office was established at Urayarra station under John McDonald however it is not recorded what year that occurred. Uriarra’s status was raised to post office on 1st January 1878 with Henry Phillips, who was employed by John McDonald, being appointed postmaster. The office closed on 17th July 1886 and subsequently reopened on 15th November 1886. The office closed permanently on 10th January 1922. Phillips had passed away some 9 years earlier.
Uriarra utilized a numeral obliterator No. 901 which was replaced by a Type 1C date stamp recorded between 1904 and 1914. A Type 2B date stamp is recorded used between 1915 and 1921.
