Upper Cotter Dam Post Office
Located 67
kms south west of the City centre, the
office opened as a non official post office with money order facilities on 12
January 1959 operated by J W Muir to service the workforce of up to 150
employees engaged to construct the new new dam later to be known as Bendora Dam
which was to increase the Cotter’s water capacity. A manual telephone exchange
was established on 26 June 1959. The office temporarily closed on 16 December
1960 and reopened again on 5 January 1961. The office permanently closed on 27
October 1961.
On opening
the Office utilized A.C.T single letter cut-down Relief date stamp ‘Y’, recorded in 1959
and a Type 3A date stamp recorded in 1960. Another rare A.C.T postmark.
