Royalla

Royalla Post Office

Royalla is located to the south of Canberra and north of Williamsdale on the Monaro Highway. The area was first settled in the 1820’s. A receiving office was established on 13 November 1905 and a telephone office on 24 June 1907 at the Royalla Railway Station. The office was operated by Mrs A. Twyford. The receiving office and telephone office were removed from the railway station on 15 July 1915 and on 10 April 1916 a post office was opened with Agnes Blewitt appointed postmistress. A manual telephone exchange was established on 16 May 1928 and this remained open until 19 December 1969 when subscribers were transferred to the small country automatic exchange at Williamsdale. The post office closed on 30 June 1971.

Royalla post office utilized a Type 2(v) date stamp recorded in 1913 and a Type 2C ‘FCT’ recorded in 1938. A Type 2C (altered to ‘ACT’) is recorded in 1964. As a Receiving Office and Telephone Office co-located, Royalla was issued a date-stamp prior to being designated a Post Office in 1916.
