Majura Post Office

Majura or Majura Valley is located to the east of Mount Ainslie and Mount Majura, extending from the now Federal Highway through to Woolshed Creek and Pialligo.  A receiving office was established at Majura on the 1st August 1898. This followed a petition of 52 residents of Majura seeking the establishment of a post office in August 1879 and further petitions in October 1880 and July 1881. The office was situated at the home of Mr William McIntosh on Block 52, Gungahlin District, adjacent the intersection of Majura Road and Avonly Road. The status of the office was raised to Post Office on 1st July 1899.

A telephone service was established on 23rd January 1929 and and a telephone exchange on 22nd April 1929.  The post office subsequently closed on 28th February 1958 as the volume of business transacted declined and the telephone exchange closed on 15th August 1958 with subscribers transferred to the Canberra automatic exchange.

The office utilized a numeral obliterator No. 1936 which subsequently was replaced by a Type 1D(i) date stamp. A Type 2A date stamp inscribed 'N.S.W', is recorded between 1913 and 1918, a Type 2C inscribed 'C.C.T.' (Canberra Capital Territory), in 1926 and a Type 2C recut to ‘F.C.T.’ between 1930 and 1937.
