Canberra Mail Exchange opened in premises at the intersection of Wentworth Avenue and Leichhardt Street, Kingston on 16 January 1966. Its name was changed to Canberra Mail Centre on 5 February 1978. On 9 November 1987 the Centre relocated to new premises located in Nyrang Street, Fyshwick at its intersection with Canberra Avenue.


The Exchange utilized Type 4E(ii)(T) ‘ACT’ post code 2600 codes ‘1,2,6 and 7’ date stamps recorded between 1979 and 1988 and code ‘RSI’ in 1983. A Type 4E(ii)(T) ‘ACT’ code ‘RS 1’ date stamp is recorded between 1980 and 1985, code ‘RS 2’ between 1980 and 1981.
